Species distribution models rarely predict the biology of real populations

چکیده
Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used in ecology. In theory, SDMs capture (at least part of) species' ecological niches and can be to make inferences about the of suitable habitat for species interest. Because suitability is expected influence population demography, have been estimate a variety parameters, from occurrence genetic diversity. However, critical look at ability predict independent data across different aspects biology lacking. Here, we systematically reviewed literature, retrieving 201 studies that tested predictions against assessments occurrence, abundance, performance, Although there some support (~53% depending on how was assessed), predictive performance these declines progressively mean fitness, At same time, observed higher success among evaluated single versus multiple species, pointing possible publication bias. Thus, limited accuracy reported here may reflect best-case scenario. We discuss limitations provide specific recommendations their use applications going forward. emphasize SDMs, especially when inform conservation decisions, should treated as hypotheses with rather than stand-ins parameters seek know.

Assessing the accuracy of species distribution models to predict amphibian species richness patterns.
1. Evaluating the distribution of species richness where biodiversity is high but has been insufficiently sampled is not an easy task. Species distribution modelling has become a useful approach for predicting their ranges, based on the relationships between species records and environmental variables. Overlapping predictions of individual distributions could be a useful strategy for obtaining ...

Predictive studies are of paramount importance for biological invasions, one of the biggest threats for biodiversity. To help and better prioritize management strategies, species distribution models (SDMs) are often used to predict the potential invasive range of introduced species. Yet, SDMs have been regularly criticized, due to several strong limitations, such as violating the equilibrium as...

A central tenet of evolutionary social science holds that behaviors, such as those associated with social dominance, produce fitness effects that are subject to cultural selection. However, evidence for such selection is inconclusive because it is based on short-term statistical associations between behavior and fertility. Here, we show that the evolutionary effects of dominance at the populati...

The wine yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is the best understood microbial eukaryote at the molecular and cellular level, yet its natural geographic distribution is unknown. Here we report the results of a field survey for S. cerevisiae,S. paradoxus and other budding yeast on oak trees in Europe. We show that yeast species differ in their geographic distributions, and investigated which ecologi...

Allopatry is commonly used to predict boundaries in species delimitation investigations under the assumption that currently allopatric distributions are indicative of reproductive isolation; however, species ranges are known to change over time. Incorporating a temporal perspective of geographic distributions should improve species delimitation; to explore this, we investigate three species of ...
